Between the Ocean and the Sky

A civic building makes space for a permanent artwork.

Independent editorial coverage. These are projects by the credited artists and organisations, not commissionit projects. Featuring an artist does not imply representation, partnership or current availability.

The commission

The City of Bellingham announced this work in the lobby of its Pacific Street Operations Center in January 2026. The city says it was completed in November 2025 and funded through its One Percent for Art programme. CODAworx also included the project in its May 2026 artist feature.

What this suggests for your brief

For a lobby commission, consider the architecture before choosing an object. Ask how people enter, where they pause and which views matter from outside. Bring the artist into conversations about structure, lighting, cleaning access and the building’s daily use.

Start with what interests you

Tell us whether it is the material, scale, light, interaction or connection to place. We can explore an original proposal for your own setting and enquire about a named artist where appropriate. Any artist involvement must be confirmed before a project is offered.
