FLEXUS

Lighting gives working infrastructure a new visual presence.

The commission

Grimanesa Amorós describes FLEXUS as a 2026 light sculpture integrated into tanks and silos at the Harper Street Asphalt Plant. The artist credits New York City’s Percent for Art programme and city agencies. Its controller schedules illumination around sunset and dawn.

What this suggests for your brief

An artwork can respond to a building’s existing purpose. Begin with what is already distinctive about the site and consider how the commission will be seen at different hours. For illuminated work, include electrical access, light spill, energy use and ongoing controls in the design conversation.

Start with what interests you

Tell us whether it is the material, scale, light, interaction or connection to place. We can explore an original proposal for your own setting and enquire about a named artist where appropriate. Any artist involvement must be confirmed before a project is offered.
